Taster Workshop: Somatic Contemporary Dance: Stroud
Come and join us for a taster workshop for adults:
Somatic Contemporary Dance !
Sunday 26 April 2026 from 11:30 – 13:00 in Maypole Hall, Stroud
This inclusive workshop welcomes all levels and bodies.
It will be meditative, flowing, challenging and fun!
It is rooted in movement patterns that follow the natural angles of our body, using the fluidity of QiGong principles, animal-like movements, elements of physical contact* and a grounded approach using floorwork.
During the workshop we will learn movements that connect to the floor and our dance surfaces, using the support of our breath and a sense of poetry to find our momentum.
It is grounded with a somatic approach, informed by the teacher’s recent journey to manage pain from scoliosis, which she has found overlaps with her sense of safety, trust, and co-regulation.
We will then move into creative explorations together using the movements learnt. There will be chances to explore solo and moving with others, and being seen and heard by each other.
You will leave the workshop feeling energised, fluid and playful, with a readiness to improvise with bold energy and soft strength.
At the end of the workshop there will be a chance to sign up to regular classes, a new pilot programme in Stroud!
*There will always be alternative non-touch options for participants who wish not to use physical contact.
Book early to avoid disappointment!

BIOGRAPHY of teacher: Jan-Ming Lee
Since 2008, Jan-Ming has been performing, collaborating and choreographing for intimate and immersive theatre, art gallery installation, film, audio and community performances; using somatic theatre and dance/music improvisation. Her work is situated in the spaces in-between things, in the movements of transition and translation between different known worlds. She has worked amongst others with Hijinx Theatre, Eelyn Lee, ZU-UK, Pell Ensemble, Tim Murray-Browne, Marie Chabert, Exit Map, Smith Dance theatre, Anusha Subramanyam, Kandinsky Theatre.
Jan-Ming, through experiences of managing fluctuating pain in her spinal curvatures, works with a holistic approach that looks for a base-line of healthy movement, working with both physical and emotional safety to let our bodies lead. This creates more possibilities for momentum, taking risks to fall and rebound in and out of dance surfaces. She aims to be inclusive in her ethos, translating movement motifs towards a diversity of bodies and minds.
